Tireless Cruise and Diaz flog Knight & Day in UK
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz go on ‘Top Gear’ in attempt to mask film’s bad reviews
Hollywood A-listers Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz were on the London leg of their European promotional tour yesterday, working round the clock to push their new big-budget action comedy Knight and Day to British cinema-goers following the film's roasting by US critics.
Both actors flew in to London from Munich yesterday to attend the UK premiere in Leicester Square with Cruise taking three hours to meet fans before heading into the screening. He also attempted to shrug off the film's negative reception and disappointing US box office figures by insisting to one journalist that Knight and Day had received "some spectacular reviews".
Cruise and Diaz also spent the afternoon participating in Top Gear's weekly time trial, 'Star in a Reasonably Priced Car'. With recent participants on the BBC show including radio presenter Johnny Vaughan, comedian Al Murray and glamour model Peta Todd, the producer who blogged, "we have never, ever had two bigger guests...for the past week the air in the office has been alive with a sort of sweaty-palmed excitement" could be excused for his enthusiasm.
Diaz may have regretted taking part, however, after she had a clutch problem in the Kia Cee'd she was driving and had to get help from Top Gear's anonymous race trainer, the Stig.
Nevertheless, both Cruise and Diaz - dressed in a silver Stella McCartney mini-dress - looked happy and relaxed at last night's premiere, giving no sign that they were unsettled by Knight and Day's bad reviews.
Cruise and Diaz are not the first Hollywood A-listers to accept an invitation from a middle-of-the-road BBC show to help flog their film this month. Last Friday The Karate Kid star Jaden Smith, 12, and his entire family - parents Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who are the film's producers, as well as nine-year-old sister Willow - spent an hour on The One Show, listening to a choir from Surrey and sampling cakes. ·
