Fitch welcomes emergency budget - with proviso
George Osborne's measures 'will strengthen confidence in triple-A rating' - but fiscal risks remain
The credit rating agency Fitch Ratings has welcomed George Osborne's emergency budget, saying it should materially strengthen confidence in Britain's public finances and its triple-A rating if the Cameron government can deliver on its planned measures.
Fitch said the budget sent a "strong statement of intent" that the new coalition government will speed up deficit reduction and reduce the UK's debt burden. However, the agency cautioned that Britain still faces "significant fiscal risks," because of uncertainty caused by public spending restraint and welfare payment cuts.
