Champions League ‘better than World Cup’

World Cup Fever: Dutch maestro bemoans quality of first-round matches

Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder blasted the quality of this year’s World Cup in a press conference yesterday, saying the "Champions League is far better" than anything football fans have seen in the first round of group games.

"Only Germany really impressed," said the midfielder who won the Champions League Trophy with Inter Milan just a month ago.

England’s Wayne Rooney is in agreement. Speaking at another press conference yesterday, he said: “To be honest, all the games I’ve watched haven’t been exciting.”

The stats back them both up. There have been fewer goals scored by the end of the first round of this World Cup than at any other in the last 80 years. There were only 1.56 goals per game on average.

However, Sneijder believes there is a chance things will improve. "I think everyone has to get used to the circumstances, like the ball and altitude, and it will all start from now on."

Yesterday’s second-round results of 4-1 (Argentina v South Korea) and 2-0 (Mexico over France) suggest Sneijder could be right. ·
