Lewis Hamilton won his first Grand Prix of the season in Hungary and dedicated his triumph to his McLaren team who have made his car a winner.

The British driver also said his thoughts were with fellow driver Felipe Massa, who is in hospital with head injuries after being hit by a spring in a freak accident during qualifiying on Saturday.

Hamilton started in fourth and forced his way to the front past Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber and pole-sitter Fernando Alonso, who lost a tyre and whose Renault team were suspended from the next race as a result.

Championship leader Jenson Button finished in seventh in his under performing Brawn GP car, and saw his lead cut to 18.5 points

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:Maurice Hamilton, Guardian: "Hamilton, the reigning world champion, has suffered a deeply frustrating season with a car which, until now, has been woefully off the pace. The Briton's new competitiveness was confirmed on lap one when he accelerated past Mark Webber, who finished third in his Red Bull, a place behind Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen."

Edward Gorman, the Times: "It was just like the old days, or last year in fact, when Hamilton was swapping race wins with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in a World Championship battle that went down to the wire. This time the Brazilian could play no part in the day's sport as he lay in an induced coma in a Budapest hospital. But, on the baking tarmac of the Hungaroring, it is unlikely that he would have been any match for the Briton. Hamilton was back to his best at the wheel of a McLaren that has improved by leaps and bounds from the slow-coach that the team rolled out at the beginning of the season."

Michael Spearman, the Sun: "Lewis Hamilton roared to his first Grand Prix win in nine months yesterday. But as well as celebrating his Hungarian triumph, the world champion said he would be praying for badly injured rival Felipe Massa. Ferrari driver Massa is in a life-threatening condition in an induced coma after brain surgery at a Budapest hospital."

Tom Cary, the Telegraph:
"Hamilton's performance in Hungary - hailed as 'faultless' by team principal Martin Whitmarsh - provided the perfect tonic to the weekend’s worrying and dominant narrative. A race started with cameras panning in on a sign in the Ferrari pit reading 'Forza Felipe. Siamo con te' ended with news that Massa's CT scan following his horrific crash in qualifying on Saturday had provided 'reassuring' results. Characteristically, Hamilton was swift to think of Ferrari's Felipe Massa in the aftermath of a chaotic race that saw Jenson Button’s title hopes take a huge hit." ·
