Andy Murray cruised into the third round at Wimbledon with an emphatic victory over Latvian Ernests Gulbis, whose big-hitting game was no match for the all round excellence of the number three seed.

The 22-year-old Scot was in imperious form and made only five unforced errors as he dismantled his opponent in front of an appreciative Centre Court crowd.

Murray is now the only remaining Briton in the singles after Elena Baltacha lost in the second round of the women's tournament to Belgian Kirsten Flipkens. His next opponent will be Serbia's Viktor Troicki in the third round.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:Kevin Eason, the Times: "Andy Murray's path to the Wimbledon final appears far more comfortable this morning after he swept aside his latest opponent and one of his leading rivals was bundled out of the tournament. Having swamped Ernests Gulbis, his second-round challenger from Latvia, 6-2, 7-5, 6-3, Murray was boosted by defeat for Juan Martín Del Potro — considered the biggest threat in his half of the draw — by Lleyton Hewitt."

Steve Bierley, the Guardian: "This was Murray at his very best, a virtuoso performance of integrated power and subtlety, allied to fleetness of foot that saw virtually every one of the Latvian's drop shots run down and put away. Gulbis was outclassed. He had two breaks points on the Murray serve in the second game, and thereafter all was downhill."

Paul Newman, the Independent: "Andy Murray and Roger Federer are seeded to meet in the final here on Sunday week and the Scot gave notice yesterday that he intends to reach his target with every bit as much panache as the Swiss. Twenty-four hours after Federer swept into the third round with the most emphatic of wins over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Murray followed him with a crushing 6-2, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Ernests Gulbis. At an hour and 28 minutes his match was a minute shorter than Federer's." ·
