Austria’s igloo hotel

The Schneedorf, Solden

Visitors to Austria's highest hotel should wrap up warm, says Yolanda Carslaw in the Sunday Telegraph. An igloo built at 2,700m in the Tyrolean Alps, the Schneedorf ("snow village") lies above the resort of Solden. You can get there by bus, but it's more fun to arrive on skis after a day on the slopes.

Inside, it's very cold - beds are made from packed snow, with sheepskin-covered air mattresses - but magical: candlelight dances on the domed ceiling of the lounge, and slightly risque sculptures are carved into the walls. Once you've downed a welcoming glass of gluhwein, piled into the sauna (in a nearby cabin) and dined on goulash and dumplings, the prospect of a night in an icy cave seems slightly less daunting.

Still, one night is definitely enough (no guest has ever stayed two).

Crystal Ski has holidays in Solden and can arrange nights in the Schneedorf for £225 for two in a double room. Contact: 0871 231 5659. ·
