Climbing in Morocco
Peaks of grandeur
Climb any peak in Morocco's Jebel Sahro and you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views not only of this "remote, rocky desert mountain range", but of the still grander, snowy heights of the neighbouring Atlas Mountains, says Beverley Fearis in the Observer. The lesser-known Jebel Sahro lies to the south of the Atlas range, on the edge of the Sahara, its "majestic, towering pinnacles" rising to 2,700m. A trek here will most likely start in the fertile Draa Valley, passing Berber villages of red mud houses, date palms and irrigated fields, before rising into the "lunar" landscape of the mountains.
This is tough walking terrain, but on a guided trek, you'll enjoy the luxury of a team of Berber muleteers, who'll set up camp for you and prepare excellent, hearty meals.
Exodus (0845 863 9600) offers an eight-day Atlas Panorama trek, departing 18 January, for £599 including flights. ·
