Philips 42in LCD: pixel perfect

The Philips 42PFL9803H is quite simply one of the best TVs yet. Using an LED backlight array rather than more traditional fluorescent lamps, it's not just beautifully built, but convincingly solves the problems of LCD TVs: its contrast ratio (quoted at an incredible 2,000,000:1) is achieved by switching segments of the LEDs off, and the Perfect Pixel HD processing makes motion smoother than melted silk. The downside is that price tag; but for the less well-heeled, it's at least a tantalising glimpse of what's to come in the future. ·
