Coastal charm

The tram journey along the Flemish coastline must be the prettiest in the world, says Harriet O'Brien in the Independent. The 70km route is lined with fine beaches, charming resort towns and nature reserves where wild grasses grow among dunes that are home to nightingales and storks. Each resort in this "much-loved playground of the Belgians" retains its distinctive character: Nieuwpoort is for families; Blankenberge for partying. But to get a real sense of the contrast on offer, head first to De Haan – which provides "old-time charm and quiet" – and then to Knokke-Heist, the "St Tropez of Belgium". The super-rich have elegant villas here, and there are 50 modern art galleries nestling among the fashion boutiques.
