Sidi Bou Said

Captivating Tunisian village

It's impossible not to fall in love with the medieval village of Sidi Bou Said, says Linda Cookson in the Independent.

Sited on a cliff above the Bay of Tunis, it appears from a distance like a "shimmering mosaic" in the Mediterranean sun. Get closer, and you'll find a "labyrinth of winding streets and secret places, where crooked flights of steps lead to hidden gardens and wooden gates open on to flower-filled courtyards".

A century ago, it seduced the likes of Gide, Matisse and Klee. There are hordes of daytrippers, but at night, the village "seems lost in time" once more, jasmine-scented and glistening in the moonlight.
