Danube by bike

Cycle through history

Cycling along the Danube, "every kilometre of the Danube cycle path has a tale to tell," says James Mackintosh in the Guardian.

Following the great river for 228km from Vienna to Linz, through wooded gorges, terraced vineyards and meadows of wild flowers, you pass a plethora of historical sites.

At Kahlenberg, the King of Poland turned back the Turks in 1683; at Durnstein is the ruined castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned; and nearby, on a clifftop, sits the magnificent baroque monastery of Melk.

But this is Europe's most popular cycle path for another reason, too: the route is lined with quaint towns, pretty villages and snack bars serving local specialities to the weary traveller. Marillen Knödel (apricot dumplings) with cream are highly recommended.
