Novel retreat

Peverell’s Tower, Dover

Peverell's Tower makes for an unusual holiday rental, says Fiona Griffiths in the Independent – but there's a "definite novelty factor" to staying in it.

The 13th century, one-bedroom tower sits within Dover Castle on the Kent coast and has "tremendous views" of the Channel from its windows, as well as a roof terrace from which to admire the "whole sweeping vista".

Inside, the apartment has been refurbished in a simple, understated style – "soft, muted colours and smart, informal furniture" – which is modern, yet in keeping with the historic setting. This is a quirky and romantic place to spend a long weekend.

Contact English Heritage (0870 333 1187) for bookings. Rentals start at £320; minimum three nights stay. ·
