Cyclist killer fined £2,200
I was shocked to hear that a man on his bike hit a girl while on a pavement and she died a few days later in hospital. He left court with a £2,200 fine... that's it! The man had time to shout at the girls to get out of his way yet didn't stop or swerve although he was only doing 17mph! The behavior of this man was disgraceful and has done nothing to improve the reputation of cyclists." Forum, cyclingweekly.com
"Suddenly cyclists, the most endangered species of road users in Britain, find themselves cast as the callous thugs of the highway. That's the evident reaction to the case of Jason Howard. Howard's behaviour was certainly deplorable... However, disasters happen every day. Last year 136 cyclists were killed on Britain's roads, and 2,428 seriously injured. The number of motorists and pedestrians killed by cyclists in the same period? One." Richard Morrison, the Times
"I know that far more cyclists are killed by car drivers, but that can be of little comfort to the deceased's family. I would like to see some formal repsonse, perhaps from CTC or British Cycling, that condemns what happens and sympathises with the bereaved family." Forum, Bikeradar.com
"It beggars belief that the maximum penalty for this offence is only a £2,000 fine. I fail to understand why he was not charged with manslaughter or at the very least with assault?" Jailhouselawyer blog
"How can he get fined for killing a teenager after he ran her over. Why didn't he get a prison sentence. It's murder even if it's on a bike, you've taken a life so you should have a suitable punishment." Forum, unrealitytv.com
"I think that this made the national news because it's such a rare event, but no doubt the anti-cycling brigade will try to give us all [cyclists] a caning over it, so here we go with yet another round of 'cyclists should' ranting in the press. CTC forum
