Mercedes reveals AMG-S65 Cabriolet

Big four-seat Mercedes convertible gets V12 bi-turbo power and minor cosmetic tweaks

Mercedes has revealed the convertible version of its AMG bred S-Class coupe, the S65 AMG Cabriolet.

The newest car to sit atop the S-Class coupe range will be seen in the flesh for the first time at the Detroit Motor Show, before a release in April with a price tag of around £200,000, according to Auto Express.

This is around £17,000 more than its coupe sibling.

The S65 replaces the S63 as the flagship S-Coupe Cabrio model and comes with a 6.0 litre V12 biturbo engine, good for 621bhp and 737lb ft of torque.

It is the same engine recently introduced on the coupe version and replaces the 577bhp 5.5 litre twin-turbocharged V8 range-topper currently available to S-Class coupe buyers.

It does 0-62mph in 4.1 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than the V8 model, but the convertible's 0-62 time now matches the coupe's despite tipping the scales at 2180kg, some 145kg heavier than the hard top car.

Top speed is electronically limited to 155mph but customers who spec the optional Driver's Package can have this raised to 186mph - and add a better set of tyres.

On a combined cycle, expect consumption at 23.5mpg and CO2 emissions of 272g/km.

There's not much to differentiate the car from the S63 in terms of design, aside from V12 badging, more chrome around the front grilles, and a new alloy wheel design.

As you'd expect for a car costing roughly £200,000, it comes with plenty of gadgets and luxury as standard, including a plush full-leather interior, 360-degree parking camera, parking assist, pedestrian detection, collision detection, automated braking and a night vision camera.

The roof can be retracted in 17 seconds, at driving speeds of up to 30mph.

When Autocar reviewed the coupe version of the S65, it noted that it is difficult to justify the £57,000 premium the S65 badged S-Class coupe carries over the V8 powered S63.

Auto Express also felt the car's price tag means that, ultimately, it will be bought by people for whom price doesn't matter.
