McLaren 570GT uncovered ahead of Geneva Motor Show

Manufacturer's 'most refined and road-biased car' will sit on top of the Sports Series range

McLaren has revealed its most "most refined and road-biased" car ahead of the Geneva Motor Show.

The 570GT is being touted as the practical option of the car-maker's newly launched Sports Series, which also features the 570S and 540C. It's "supposed to be the more luxurious of the three supercars, targeting performance and the ability to journey slightly further than your nearby racetrack", says Top Gear.

On the outside, the most significant aspect marking it out as a useable supercar is the body style over the rear axle. The 570S's carbon fibre deck with floating buttresses is gone, replaced by a convex glass hatch that accesses a leather-lined touring deck with 220 litres of boot space. Added to the 130 litres available in the nose of the car, the total luggage capacity is actually bigger than that of a Ford Focus, says Autocar. The rear end feeds into an all-new wing, too, which is slightly taller than that of the 570S.

The cabin is similar to other McLaren offerings, but with more focus on luxury and comfort: full leather upholstery, electric adjustable heated seats, a new panoramic glass roof and extra noise insulation mated to a quieter exhaust system.

Parking sensors, wider-opening soft-close doors and an eight-speaker audio system come as standard.

The Grand Tourer emphasis continues under the bodywork. The 570GT still gets the 562bhp twin-turbocharged V8 from the 570S – good for 0.62mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 204mph – but the suspension has been tweaked for a softer, suppler ride. Spring rates are down front and rear, while the anti-roll bars have been fettled for an improved ride over broken surfaces.

Prices will start from £154,000 when it goes on sale later this year and McLaren has plans to introduce a spider version of the GT in 2017, when the company hopes to hit its production target of 4,000 cars a year.
