A 16-year-old girl has died after two men reportedly opened fire on a crowd in Oakland, California, on Tuesday.

Initial reports said six more had been shot, but police later corrected that, reports the East Bay Times, saying only four others had been injured.

The wounded, who were taken to hospital, were said to be young men and women in their mid-teens to their 20s.

Witnesses said there was "some sort of altercation in the street" before two men fired into the crowd, according to NBC. They apparently fled in a vehicle.

No motive has yet been offered, but the East Bay Times says police were told the wounded had been attending a vigil for two local 15-year-old boys who had drowned in May.
