Hiro Miyoshi's top tips for autumn hair

London-based stylist Hiro Miyoshi is renowned for his excellent cuts and sublime hair colouring, which have seen him style the likes of Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon, former model Ivana Trump, TV presenters Rachel Stevens and Laura Whitmore and several members of Middle Eastern royalty.

A stylist since the age of 16, Hiro moved to London in 2005 and has worked at Michael John and Nyumba – both well-known for their international and celebrity clientele. Here, Hiro provides us with his top tips for caring for your hair in autumn and winter.

• First of all, your hair and scalp will probably need a hair treatment combined withOribe or Nashi's argan oil to restore its moisture levels after the sun exposure. This is key to prepare it for the cold weather.
• It's also time to change your shampoo and conditioner to suit the winter months. Depending on your colour and natural weight of your hair, Oribe, L'Oreal and Nashi are our favourite brands because of their diversified range for all hair types.
• During the colder months, use products that contain protein to keep your hair feeling amazing - protein-based shampoos and treatments work their way into the hair cuticle rather than just sitting on the hair shaft, helping repair damaged hair from the inside out. Two great protein shampoos I recommend are Oribe's Brilliance & Shine, which contains sweet almond protein, repairing dry and damaged hair, and also pearl protein that adds to the shine, and Oribe Shampoo for Moisture & Control, which is great for adding healthy hydration and softening coarse locks while infusing your hair with maximum shine.
• Make sure to alternate your shampoos as too much protein in your hair can damage it, so using a protein-based shampoo alongside one designed to moisturise the hair is a great combination. Try not to use a protein-based shampoo more than twice a week, while protein-based treatments such as Kerastase Resistance Therapiste Masque need only be done once a month. I also recommend Nashi shampoos.
• Don't forget to use the correct products when you are blow-drying or styling at home. I suggest a moisturising cream such as Kerastase Nutritive Nectar Thermique Creme that can be applied on damp or dry hair. This will help to keep the hair hydrated in the cold weather and maintain a glossy and soft feel to your locks. I also recommend Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream, which defends hair from oxidative stress, photoaging and the deterioration of natural keratin, all while protecting from the drying, damaging and colour-depleting effects of the elements
• Finally, stay stylish! There are so many events and parties in the winter - don't shy away to show a new look. It terms of hairstyle, I think that the natural look and big volume is the way forward this winter. Most people would change their colour, too, to suit the mood. Book a consultation with your stylist and colourist. It may be time for that trim to prevent split ends in the cold weather. Regular haircuts help to stop the hair from breaking, so we would suggest every six to eight weeks. However, if you are growing your hair, you can push the time between trims to ten to 12 weeks.
