Bono's Spider-Man show claims another victim
Spider-Man actor taken to hospital after falling into Broadway theatre pit
The curse of the $65 million albatross that is Bono's Spider-Man musical continues to wreak havoc on Broadway, with another actor needing hospital treatment. This one plunged into the pit during Monday night’s show.
Audience members tweeted that the performance at Foxwoods Theatre had been stopped after the unidentified actor playing Spider-Man fell when a safety-cable snapped. Later an ambulance was spotted outside the theatre.
One Twitter user, Brian Lynch, posted: “Spidey took what seemed to be a planned fall into the stage pit. Then we heard MJ screaming.”
Another, Steven Tartick, tweeted: “It looked really bad. A character fell at least two stories [sic] without a harness. So shaken up.”
A brief statement by a spokesman for the show confirmed: “An actor sustained an injury at tonight’s performance of Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark. He fell several feet from a platform approximately seven minutes before the end of the performance, and the show was stopped. All signs were good as he was taken to the hospital for observation.”
It is the fourth major injury connected to “the most expensive musical ever made”. Directed by Julie 'The Lion King' Taymor and with a musical score written by U2’s Bono and The Edge, the show has encountered numerous problems with the computerised high-wires needed to create the two dozen flying sequences.
Aerialist Kevin Aubin broke both his wrists when he slammed into the top of the stage during a flying demonstration for ticket agents in October. Another performer broke his foot in rehearsals and actress Natalie Mendoza, who was also left hanging above the audience during the first preview, suffered concussion when she was hit on the head by a heavy rope while she was standing in the wings.
Even before this latest calamity, the crew had safety concerns about the show and the official opening date was pushed back another month to February. ·
