Meghan Markle’s Toronto house goes up for sale

With news that Meghan Markle will spend Christmas at Sandringham with the Royal family and move into Kensington Palace after her marriage to Prince Harry, it is little surprise she has decided to up sticks and leave her Toronto home, which she has rented for the past six years while filming the hit legal TV drama Suits.

Now, obviously wanting to cash in on its newfound royal provenance, the owners of the property have decide to put it up for sale, and it’s fair to assume there will be quite a bit of interest.

For someone who will soon be used to much grandeur surroundings, Markle’s former Toronto address has been described as a “modest home” by CBC News.

Spread across three levels, the spacious property has three bedrooms on the top floor, separate living and dining rooms and a kitchen opening out to a paved garden. There’s also a large family room on the lower-ground floor and a garage with two parking spaces and a fully-furnished basement.

Bought for just CAD$508,000 (£296,400) back in 2007, the house has more than doubled in value in a decade, despite Toronto’s cooling housing market. It has now been listed for CAD$1.395 million (£811,000), no doubt driven by its new notoriety as the neighbourhood paparazzo count has surged over the past year “and with every expectation of a bidding war pushing the final number several hundreds of thousands of dollars higher”, says the Globe and Mail.

Located in Toronto’s upper-middle class enclave of Seaton Village in the trendy Annex neighbourhood of the city, the area is more of a mid-range Notting Hill than Mayfair but still conveniently located near the centre.

Daniel Freeman, broker with Freeman Real Estate, the company listing the house, described it as “private with lovely amenities” located in a “haven of safety family, inclusiveness and community”.

But because its unusual history Homes and Property says interested buyers “need to be vetted to view the three-bedroom house, thanks to the global furore surrounding the most famous engaged couple in the world”.
