Rum Old Fashioned recipe: the perfect winter warmer
Premium Jamaican rum-maker Appleton Estate share their winning formula
With the long evenings drawing ever nearer, it’s time to stock up dark spirits and learn how to whip up the perfect winter warmer.
To celebrate the return of their Crafted with Joy workshop series, premium Jamaican rum-maker Appleton Estate has shared the recipe for their version of a classic cocktail, the Old Fashioned.
Over four evenings at sessions around London, rum aficionados can sip an expertly crafted cocktail while trying their hand at blacksmithing, woodwork or candle-making (because why not?) under the tutelage of some of the capital’s finest urban artisans. Guests even get a souvenir to take home, created with their own hands. Read on for more information on how to get involved.

Be sure also to try this rum-infused twist on the Old Fashioned, made using Appleton Estate Rare Blend 12 Year Old, a blend of hand-selected, golden rums aged for a smooth yet complex taste.
Appleton Estate 12YO Rum Old Fashioned
Rum replaces whisky here to reveal the true quality of the spirit. But not just any rum - this blend that is carefully crafted and aged in Jamaica for a twist on a timeless classic.
Recipe:
50ml Appleton Estate Rare Blend 12 Year Old
10ml Sugar Syrup
Three dashes Angostura Bitters
Orange peel, for garnish
Method:
Add all the ingredients to a mixing glass with large cubed ice.
Stir quickly until glass frosts then strain into a rocks glass over a large block of ice.
Garnish with orange peel.
The first Crafted with Joy workshop, Cocktail Mixing Spoon Forging with Blenheim Forge, takes place at Blenheim Forge Steel Workshop in Peckham on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 October.
On Wednesday 31 October at Bonds Hackney, Earl of East London founders Niko Dafkos and Paul Firmin will show you how to make a hand-poured, scented candle bursting with the aromas of Appleton Estate.
The final workshop, Wood Carving with Grain and Knot, takes place at Benk + Bo in Spitalfields on Wednesday 7 November. Woodcarver Sophie Sellu will share her expert tips to help guests craft their own chopping board - perfect for preparing your cocktail garnish.
Tickets to each session cost £35 and include a welcome or farewell cocktail, rum cocktail masterclass, the craft workshop and a Crafted with Joy take-home tasting kit. Tickets can be booked in advance here.
