ARSENAL defender Andre Santos is "facing jail" after allegedly been involved in a high-speed car chase through London with police. The Sun claims the 29-year-old Brazilian international "sped away from chasing cops at up to 130mph".

According to the paper, the chase occurred on Friday, the day before Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a goalless draw at home to Sunderland. Driving through rush-hour traffic in a black Maserati GranTurismo supercar, Santos came to the attention of a police patrol car and was followed.
It's alleged that when Santos saw the police car he took off and a chase ensued with the police struggling to keep pace with the South American's £110,000 sports car. Santos was finally stopped a short distance from Arsenal's training ground at London Colney in Hertfordshire.

The Sun quotes a source as saying "he was travelling at speeds up to 130 mph. Further enquiries are ongoing to verify the speed using on-board police cameras and technical equipment".

The BBC carries a Metropolitan Police statement saying: "Shortly after 9.30am on Friday August 17, a 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop for police on the A1, near to Junction 22 of the M25. Officers' attention was drawn to the vehicle due to the manner of its driving. The man has been bailed to return at a date in mid-September."

The Sun claims that Santos, who didn't feature against Sunderland, could be jailed "for up to two years" if the case goes to Crown Court and he's convicted of dangerous driving and failing to stop. That seems extreme, however, with a hefty fine and driving ban the more likely outcome.

Nonetheless the incident will be an embarrassment to Santos, who arrived at the Emirates this time last year in a £5.5m move from Turkish side Fenerbahce, and made 21 appearances for  the Gunners last season. The Sun says the married player has "acquired a taste for British institutions like  fish and chips and Strictly Come Dancing" since arriving in London.

It seems he's also been watching Top Gear.
