Scientists discover the secret of sexy dancing
Video: A study reveals that throwing arms and legs around is not enough - a good dancer puts his back into it
The secret of wowing the ladies on the dancefloor has been revealed by scientists, who have discovered that the mark of a good dancer is the abilty, or willingness, to literally put your back into it.
Psychologists from the University of Northumbria used footage of men getting down to discover which moves distinguished the good dancers from bad.
Male volunteers were given the cringeworthy task of dancing alone in front of a video camera for 30 seconds, with sensors attached to their bodies.
Their moves were then attributed to a virtual dancer, or avatar - to eliminate any judgement on the grounds of size, shape or looks - and played to a group of women.
They identified the best dancers as the ones who threw a variety of different shapes and tilted and twisted their neck and torso - as illustrated above. Bad dancers used their arms and legs in isolation – like this.
Nick Neave who led the study said: "It's rare that someone is described as a good dancer if they are flinging their arms about but not much else." ·
