Fauhope House, Melrose

Top class b&b puts others to shame

Set within sprawling gardens and woods overlooking the Tweed Valley and Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders, Fauhope House has one of the loveliest views in Britain.

Add the care and attention lavished on guests by its owners, the Robsons, and you have a b&b that puts many top-class hotels to shame, says Alex Polizzi in the Independent on Sunday.

The turreted Arts and Crafts house was designed by architect Sidney Mitchell for a Glaswegian shipping tycoon in 1897. Its terrace is wonderfully "tranquil" on summer evenings; in winter, guests can settle into a sofa by the fire in the candlelit drawing room.
