Escaped bull injures 40 at Spanish Festival

Video: Spectators stampede as bull jumps into stands at a Navarra bullring

LAST UPDATED AT 15:36 ON Thu 19 Aug 2010

A crazed bull got its revenge on bloodthirsty spectators when it leapt the fence of a bullring and hurled itself into the stands, injuring more than thirty people.

The incident occurred during a bullfight in the town of Navarra, in Spain's Navarra region.

Dramatic footage from Sky News shows spectators-including children-frantically trying to avoid the bull as it ploughed through the stands during a contest of recortadores, in which participants try to avoid the bull whilst staying as close to it as possible.

Employees of the bullring finally managed to get control over the bull after 15 minutes, where it was later reportedly removed and killed.

Ruairidh got a little hot under the collar there... But kept his cool and didn't do no swearing, so well done. However, I'm disappointed the bull gets dragged off and killed. Should be some kind of reward for being a good fighter.

Richard Sayers is obviously just another ill-informed non-Spanish critic of that which he knows nothing. Far from being "blood thirsty" the spectators at this and many other fiestas during the season, are participating in a tradition that, far from being cruel, is solely responsible for the Torro Bravo's existence today.
Sure, these things happen and sometimes people get hurt but nowhere near as many as at the various football stadium collapses, stampedes, fires as witnessed over the past few decades, to say nothing of the decline in English culture allowing myriad shootings and stabbings on the streets of those once fair cities.
Maybe he and those other bullring virgins, would like to research a little history before leveling stilted and moralising criticism at the overwhelming majority of the population of a fellow European state.
Having been resident in this wonderful and historic land for over a decade, learned the language and, I hope, assimilated the culture. I find this sort of ignorant and xenophobic rhetoric insulting to my adopted nation and our wonderful cultural heritage.
Forty people? May hap he would be better employed questioning the reasons for so many maimings and deaths globally at the hands of the great western world's blood thirsty leadership and their armies.
