Memorial wreath attacks Ukrainian president
A giant commemorative wreath fell on top of President Viktor Yanukovych at a memorial service
A video of a giant commemorative wreath falling on top of the president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, while Russian president Dmitry Medvedev maintains a dignified expression has gone viral after the authorities ‘encouraged’ broadcasters not to repeat it.
The video (above) shows Yanukovych and Medvedev at a Second World War remembrance ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Kiev. In the driving rain, the pair stand in front of eight-feet-tall wreaths. Yanukovych’s wreath appears to wait for the president to bow, before sneakily catching a gust of wind and flying straight into him.
Medvedev, a master of the inscrutable expression following his years at the Kremlin, maintains a dignified posture while bodyguards restrain the giant wreath. A picture taken at the ceremony (above) shows just how miserable the weather really was.
Unfortunately, Yanukovych, who was only elected in February 2010, is a man who some might consider an old-style Soviet and his people allegedly tried to suppress the video.
Journalist Sergiy Leshchenko told AFP: "The whole story would have remained an insignificant curiosity if the presidential administration itself had not attracted attention to it. Fundamentally, what happened was not even news. But the presidency's desire to cover up this episode had all the attributes of censorship." ·
