W, Washington DC

Old-School glamour in a presidential neighbourhood

LAST UPDATED AT 15:05 ON Thu 11 Mar 2010

The W chain usually goes for "high gloss modern" buildings, says Mark Hughes in The Independent – but in Washington DC it has taken a different approach, revamping a 1917 Beaux Arts building previously known as the Hotel Washington.

Parts of the Godfather films were shot here, and Elvis stayed in Room 505. The makeover has introduced plenty of hip modern features, but the building's "grand historical fabric" still shines through to marvellous effect.

Rooms are excellent, the steakhouse restaurant is good, and the rooftop nightclub enjoys "stunning" views – thanks to the hotel’s superb location just two blocks from the White House.

Doubles from £267.
