King John Inn, Wiltshire

Rustic comfort with a high-tech twist

LAST UPDATED AT 17:01 ON Thu 25 Feb 2010

The King John Inn sits in the tiny village of Tollard Royal on the Wiltshire/Dorset border, a stone’s throw from the "peaceful" Ashcombe estate, home to Guy Ritchie and, until recently, his now ex-wife, Madonna. A Victorian coaching inn, it was "failing and fetid" until wine merchant Alex Boon and his wife, Gretchen, came to the rescue, says Martin Hemming in The Sunday Times. The inn has a "smart-casual" bar/ dining room which serves food that is "gamey, meaty, British and very local". Rooms are pleasant, too, with "distressed furniture" and hi-tech touches such as flat-screen televisions and WiFi.
Doubles from £100 b&b.
