Hotel of the week: Oberoi Grand, Kolkata
Walk into another world at the 'Grande Dame of Chowringhee' - voted best luxury hotel in India
The "chalky white" Oberoi Grand is a "classic example of Raj-era grandeur", says Cheryl Newman in The Sunday Telegraph.
Its lobby sets the tone: "old-money elegant", with black marble floors, teak furnishings, simple white paintwork and an "impressive" chandelier. Rooms differ in size and décor, but all are dazzlingly hi-tech.
Breakfast is a "generous global banquet"; and there are two restaurants, one in the "shady" garden and another, "sumptuously decorated", serving Thai food. Staff are "charming and attentive"; the pool is "a treat"; and the hotel’s location – on Jawaharlal Nehru Road – is perfect for sightseeing and exploring the city.
Doubles from £300pn.
