Magical, atmospheric hotel in the midst of Wiltshire pastoral idyll

LAST UPDATED AT 14:31 ON Fri 11 Dec 2009

With its gargoyles, tall chimneys and Italian gardens, the Manor House Hotel would make a wonderful film set, says Francesca Hoyles in The Daily Telegraph. It sits just next to one of England's most "photogenic" villages, too - Castle Combe in Wiltshire – which guests can enjoy after all the day-trippers have left.

Many of the rooms have lovely views of the hotel's "perfect" lawns, the surrounding woods or the village itself. The décor is attractive, though some rooms have "tired and outdated" fittings - refurbishment is under way. Food and service in the Michelin-starred restaurant are excellent. Doubles from £180, incl. breakfast. Contact: 01249-782206; manorhouse.co.uk ·
