Hotel of the week: Grand Hotel, Stockholm
Opulent and majestic Stockholm hotel that lives up to its name
Any coastal city with pretentions has a Grand Hotel, says Sophie Lam in The Independent – and they rarely live up to the name (think of party-conference venues with "lurid carpets"). But the Grand Hotel in Stockholm is simply "dazzling".
Built in 1874, it bristles with chandeliers, gilt Corinthian columns and purple velvet sofas; for years, the Nobel Prize banquets were held in its Hall of Mirrors (dripping in gold, glass and crystal). Its harbourside setting makes for "gorgeous" views; rooms are large and "elegant", yet "homely"; and its chef, Mathias Dahlgren, has two well-deserved Michelin stars. Double rooms from £191.
