Hotel of the week: an intriguing restoration of an 18th-century sugar refinery delights in Bristol

LAST UPDATED AT 17:52 ON Thu 13 Aug 2009

Bristol's Hotel du Vin is housed in an 18th-century sugar refinery, "a heritage that makes for an intriguing restoration", says William Cashmore in the Sunday Telegraph. You can still sense its history, but there are "lovely new touches" everywhere, such as Persian rugs, "chunky cast-iron radiators" and a fountain in the cobbled courtyard.

The bistro, with its "fireplaces, distressed walls and general Miss Havisham feel", is "very good" and "well-priced"; rooms have "teak furniture", "huge beds" and "wonderful walk-in showers"; the service is "attentive"; and the location, five minutes from Cabot Circus in the city centre, is excellent.
