Lisbon’s colourful variety
The beautiful, historic Portuguese capital receives many fewer than its fair share of visitors from the UK
Lisbon receives far less than its fair share of visitors from the UK, says Chris Leadbeater in the Independent. A beautiful historic city with a "hip, young atmosphere", it is "compact", "inexpensive" (even given the euro's current strength) and only two hours from London by plane. Its situation, scattered over seven hills, led the city to develop in distinct, colourfully contrasting enclaves, while providing "lovely views at every turn".
The medieval Alfama district sits high on a crag, crowned with a Moorish castle; the Baixa, beneath it, "exudes 18th-century glamour"; the "labyrinthine" Bairro Alto is crammed with good, affordable restaurants; and the Belem is an "alluring" riverside neighbourhood where art galleries and 19th-century patisseries sit side by side.
