Royal Llandovery
Find out what Prince Charles sees in the small Welsh town where he recently bought a farmhouse
Prince Charles has recently bought a farmhouse near the little town of Llandovery in South Wales. It's anyone's guess as to why, says Penny Wark in the Times - but Llandovery's potential as a tourist destination (still, thankfully, unrealised) might have something to do with it. It is a "charming" place, "offering the best of old Wales" with its "painted terraced houses", Norman castle and "friendly" inhabitants.
Indeed, its only concessions to modernity are a single deli and a "luxurious guesthouse", the New White Lion. There is wonderful walking country all around, including the "spectacularly diverse" Dinas Nature Reserve and the Brecon Beacons. The "pretty" hillside town of Llandeilo, 12 miles away, is also worth a visit.
The New White Lion (01550 720 685) has rooms from £100 a night. ·
