Hotel of the week: Gidleigh Park, Devon

Classic country house hotel gets the modern touch

LAST UPDATED AT 17:23 ON Tue 28 Jul 2009

For nearly 30 years, Gidleigh Park was "the quintessential country house hotel", says Fiona Duncan in the Sunday Telegraph.

Recently, however, a new owner has given the "Tudor-style" building a makeover, dispensing with "ticking clocks and curled-up cats" in favour of "contemporary" amenities and design.

So, while its setting – "an oasis of gardens, rivers and woods on the edge of Dartmoor" – seems quite untouched by the years, the hotel itself now bristles with modern luxuries like "private hot tubs, steam rooms and spa treatments".

The service is hit and miss, but the food is "sensational".
