Hotel of the Week: Hotel Screen, Kyoto

Ancient Japan gets futuristic

LAST UPDATED AT 12:28 ON Tue 7 Apr 2009

Hotel Screen is Kyoto's first boutique hotel – a slice of the 21st century in the heart of Japan's ancient capital, says Danielle Demetriou in the Independent. It is housed in a "grey Cubist" building; the lobby is "white and uncomplicated"; and each of the 13 guest rooms is created by a different artist – but all are conceived in the same "clean, modern" mode. Still, there are nods to Kyotan culture, from the sliding wooden partitions in one room to the kimono-clad staff performing tea ceremonies in the lobby. A fusion of French and Kyotan cuisine is served in the "sleek" restaurant: breakfast is an "extravaganza" of bite-sized dishes, each "as pretty as a picture".
