Hotel of the Week: The Carlton
Nearly a New York gem
The Carlton has so much going for it, says Jane Cullen in the Daily Telegraph. You couldn't wish for a better location in New York – bang in the middle of Midtown. Then there's the "elegant" decor: the lobby is "imposing", all "swirling staircases, brass and beige leather", the rooms are small (this is New York) but "cunningly arranged". The Michelin-starred restaurant is rather good, too, with a French/American menu that is "more appetising than it sounds". Sadly, the service lets the whole place down: with no one around when you need them, it can feel like "a bottom-end motel".
