Sarasota, bohemian Florida
Art in the Sunshine State
Sarasota is "the Greenwich Village of Florida" – the bohemian heart of the Sunshine State, says Ian McCurrach in the Independent on Sunday. There are vast stretches of white sand and colourful Gulf Coast sunsets to enjoy on the city's eight islands; but beyond the beaches, its historic town has a "creative soul", hosting opera and ballet companies, artist communities and a dozen theatre troupes. This month, the city "springs into life" with a series of "high-profile events", including its annual Jazz and Film festivals. But there are plenty of permanent attractions, too, among them the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, which houses the circus magnate's collection, including works by Titian and Velazquez.
