Nick Clegg gaffe caught on microphone

Deputy prime minister jokes about his close relationship to David Cameron (with video)

Nick Clegg has joined the roll call of politicians to have been caught out by a wireless microphone after being recorded joking about his closeness to his coalition partner David Cameron.

The clip (above) was recorded after a joint press conference in Nottingham at which Clegg and Cameron were talking about a new 'enterprise zone'.

As the pair walked off the set, Clegg is overheard saying to the prime minister: "If we keep doing this we won't find anything to bloody disagree about in the bloody TV debates!" Cameron can be seen politely laughing.

Clegg's faux-pas, while slightly embarrassing because of the implicit acknowledgement that he is perhaps a little closer to a Conservative prime minister than many fellow Lib Dems would be comfortable with, is not quite on the scale of Gordon Brown's gaffe last year.

The then-prime minister fell victim to a Sky News wireless microphone that he forgot to remove after a walkabout in Rochdale during which he was accosted by a pensioner who challenged him on immigration.

As his car drove off, he was heard calling her a "bigoted woman". ·

Clegg is turning out to be a bit of a liability. He recently appeared at his party conference talking (five mentions) about "alarm clock Britain" - an obscure reference to those of us who still have jobs. He also used it in a soundbite opp to a TV crew...not the catchiest of catchphrases, and not one that will get into the history books unless there is a section 'the ones that got away...'.

These two are definitely birds of a feather in more than one respect, none can say to the other 'come back' from the brink. Which is what a successful duo should be all about.Britain is in a really bad way and will continue to be for the rest of the term of office af this Laurel and Hardy pair.
