Big Vegas fight in jeopardy as Pretty Boy Floyd is jailed
Mayweather gets 90 days' jail after admitting he hit his ex-girlfriend in front of their children
CHAMPION boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was yesterday sentenced to 90 days in jail after pleading guilty to domestic violence charges. The verdict could kill the prospects of a highly-anticipated fight in Las Vegas with Manny Pacquiao.
'Pretty Boy' Mayweather, unbeaten in 42 fights, was sentenced after admitting that he had hit his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris in front of their children in an incident last year. The 34-year-old also told the Las Vegas court he had threatened Harris, saying he would make her "disappear", The Daily Telegraph reports.
Judge Melissa Saragosa ordered the boxer to serve 100 hours' community service and pay a $2,500 fine in addition to the jail sentence.
"Punishment is appropriate," Saragosa said. "No matter who you are, you have consequences to your actions when they escalate to this level of violence."
Prosecutor Lisa Luzaich argued the sentence was too light. "He just continually gets himself into trouble and is able to get out of it. Essentially because of who he is, he is able to get away with everything. The only thing that's going to get this man's attention is incarceration."
Although Mayweather's plea deal meant he avoided a felony conviction and the possibility of several years behind bars, his 90 days sentence is still likely to be disruptive.
According to the L A Times, Mayweather has reserved the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for his next fight on 5 May and excitement had been growing that, after years of failed talks, a 'super-fight' with eight-division champion Pacquiao was imminent.
That prospect now appears dead in the water, given that after Mayweather's sentence is completed, there will not be enough time for promotion or training. "You don't need to be a genius to count the days," a Pacquiao's camp insider told the Times. ·
