The Times and the Sunday Times online subscriptions have topped 105,000 since the paywall went up four months ago, according to a report by the publishers.

A further 100,000 readers logged in with a joint print and website subscription.

The Times Online registered 2.7 million unique users last month, an 87% drop from the 21 million unique users they received earlier this year.

About 50,000 people have a monthly subscription for either the website, iPad or Kindle editions.

Times editor James Harding said: "It's very early days but we're hugely encouraged. We're seeing that those people who are reading the digital editions of the Times and the Sunday Times really like them, if they sign up for a trial they tend to stick with us.”
