CBI calls for tougher rules on strikes as Tube halts
Business digest: Now employers should be able to hire temps, says CBI
The business lobbying organisation, CBI, has called on the government to overhaul existing strike laws so that organisations can recruit temporary workers to cover for striking employees.
In a report published today, the CBI also called for more measures to curb strikes and repeated its proposal to raise the level of support required for walkouts to 40 per cent - such a rule would have prevented the recent tube strikes in London, including today's.
The tube strikes last month, over proposed plans to cut 800 ticket staff jobs and a below inflation pay-rise, cost London nearly £50m per day and there are plans for further stikes in November if the dispute remains unresolved.
