New BP boss Bob Dudley to set up safety division
Business Digest: The unit will have ‘sweeping powers’ to intervene and uphold standards
Incoming BP boss Bob Dudley, who takes over from Tony Hayward on Friday, has announced the creation of a new safety division with "sweeping powers" to prevent a repetition of the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster.
There will also be a management reshuffle with Andy Inglis, the head of the oil firm's exploration and production division, stepping down. There will be no direct replacement and the division will be split into three.
The new safety division will have the authority to intervene in all aspects of BP's technical activities to uphold safety standards. It will be overseen by Mark Bly, who conducted the internal investigation in the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and he will report directly to Dudley (above).
