The News of the World is to join News International stablemates the Sunday Times and Times behind a paywall from October. Readers will be charged £1 for a day's access and £1.99 for a four-week subscription for access to the website of the UK's biggest selling national Sunday newspaper. An iPad app will cost £1.19 per week.

The news leaves the Sun as the only Murdoch-owned UK newspaper with a free website. Readers of the Sunday Times and Times websites have had to pay £1 per day or £2 per week for access since July.

Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, said: "News International is leading the industry by delivering on its commitment to develop new ways of making the business of news an economically exciting proposition."

The News of the World website, notw.co.uk, will be relaunched and promises a "modern, innovative design, making much more of the News of the World's exclusive video and pictures."
