Rupert Murdoch takes a pay cut - down to $16.8m
Business Digest: Murdoch and son’s rewards dwarfed by News Corp COO’s pay
Despite News Corp recording an 11 per cent rise in annual profits, chairman and chief executive Rupert Murdoch took a six per cent pay cut last year, according to figures filed with US regulators.
His annual salary of $8.1 remained the same and he was granted $4.1m of stock and share options (taking his total shareholding to $4.5bn) but his bonus was cut by 20 per cent, giving him a total pay packet for the year of $16.8m - his lowest since 2003.
The figures also show that his third wife, Wendi, was paid $92,000 in consultancy fees for advising MySpace China while his son James, chairman of BSkyB, took a 13 per cent cut in pay, down to $8.8m.
The Murdochs' pay for the year was dwarfed by that of Chase Carey, News Corp's chief operating officer. He collected $23.1m, boosted by a $10m "golden hello again" for rejoining News Corp from DirecTV.
