British economy shows fastest growth since 2001
Business Digest: Second quarter growth greater than first thought
The UK economy grew in the second quarter of 2010 by more than initially thought, thanks to a strong performance in the construction sector.
The economy grew by 1.2 per cent in the quarter, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), revising its previous estimate of 1.1 per cent growth. It is the fastest rate of quarterly expansion since the first three months of 2001.
The ONS said construction output grew by 8.5 per cent in the second quarter, up from a previous estimate of 6.6 per cent, but air transport fell by 11 per cent due to the ash cloud and British Airways strike.
A Treasury spokesman said: "While the Government is cautiously optimistic about the path for the economy, the job is not yet done."
