Robert Swannell to follow Stuart Rose at M&S
Business Digest: New chairman joins Bolland to bring Rose era to an end
Britain's biggest clothing retailer Marks & Spencer has named City heavyweight Robert Swannell to succeed Stuart Rose as chairman. He will join the board on October 4 and become chairman on January 4.
Swannell, 59, is a former chairman of Citi's (C.N) European investment bank and vice chairman of Citi Europe and the current chairman of music, books and games retailer HMV Group. "It is a privilege to be asked to chair one of the world's greatest brands," he said.
Stuart Rose has had a rocky relationship with institutional shareholders since he combined the roles of chairman and CEO in 2008 against corporate governance guidelines. Marc Bolland, the new CEO, is already in place.
