CBI urges stricter laws on industrial action

Ahead of Tuesday's emergency budget, which is expected to lead to further unemployment, the CBI is requesting new labour laws to make it more difficult for workers to strike. In its report, Making Britain the Place to Work, the business leaders' group is asking for the consultation period for collective redundancies to be shortened from 90 days to 30 days.
The CBI is also calling for changes to strike ballot rules. It believes strikes should only go ahead if 40 per cent of the balloted workforce support the action. Brendan Barber, TUC general secretary, said the proposals were "a charter for exploitation at work".
