THE NEW London Gateway port in Thurrock, Essex will open during the last three months of 2013, according to owners DP World. The company estimates that the project will create 32,000 jobs and add £3.2bn to the UK economy each year.

DP world, based in Dubai, believes the site will handle 1.6 million standard shipping containers a year, which will eventually rise to 3.5 million containers. London Gateway will become the largest deep-sea port in the UK.

The company claims that bypassing road transportation will have a positive environmental effect, while Business Secretary Vince Cable believes it will help British business to be competitive.
