Chelsea tractor Cayenne drives Porsche ahead
Business digest: Luxury carmaker on track for record sales year, boosted by Chinese wealthy
Luxury carmaker Porsche has defied the sluggish economy by shifting 56,272 cars in the first half of this year alone, putting the company on track to break its own record of 100,000 in a year.
Sales were driven by Porsche's SUV, the Cayenne. Total global sales of the car, known as the Chelsea tractor of China due to its popularity with the emerging wealthy (although surely 'Chongqing tractor' would be more pithy), hit 28,405 units between January and June.
China now accounts for a fifth of Porsche's total sales, up 47 per cent on last year - although the US remains Porsche's biggest market, with sales up 25 per cent on last year. Porsche is now the world's most profitable carmaker.
