Business digest: But shares fall at world’s largest software maker as online division flounders

Microsoft has announced record annual revenues of almost $70bn thanks to strong sales of its Xbox 360 gaming console and its Office software. Earnings by the world's biggest software maker exceeded expectations, with annual net income jumping 23 per cent to $23.15bn.

Latest figures also showed that Microsoft's final quarter revenues reached a record high of $17.4bn.

But despite beating analyst earnings estimates Microsoft's shares fell yesterday thanks to losses in its online division. That section of the company, which includes its Bing search engine, lost $728m on revenues of just $662m. Analysts also blamed a slowdown in revenues in Microsoft’s Windows division, which sells licences for PCs.
